Statement on the Passing of Ted Halstead

1968-2020

Students for Carbon Dividends mourns the tragic passing of Ted Halstead, who was the Founder and President of the Climate Leadership Council and a titan of the climate movement. Ted was a larger-than-life figure, an inspiration and leader to many, and a champion of the quest to embolden American leadership on climate change. A pioneer of the carbon dividends movement, Ted embodied the hope, optimism, and persistence that is so needed in the climate cause.

As a mentor and advisor to our organization, Ted modeled what he preached. He believed that smart policy, unlikely allies, and tenacious organizing were the essential building blocks of a climate breakthrough. Most importantly, he knew how to bring these principles to life. Ted possessed an awe-inspiring ability to “will things into existence,” something he did again, and again, and again. By leading the creation of the broadest climate coalition in US history in just three years, he accomplished in a short period what would take others a lifetime—a testament to his relentless drive and spirit, gifts as an organizer and strategist, and sheer force of character.

While Ted had a greatly outsized impact, he also knew that this movement was about much more than any individual. Ted’s greatest gift was his infectious optimism and ability to awaken in others—from giants of American politics to everyday students—an understanding that they could play a meaningful role in the solution to climate change. Because of this, Ted leaves behind a formidable coalition of passionate and dedicated climate champions. In his honor, the journey continues and the effort to make carbon dividends a reality marches on.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Ted’s wife and young daughter, whose birth and future inspired him to pick-up the climate mantle. May his memory be a blessing.
