Alaska Youth Climate Summit
Summit Recap
Last week, S4CD hosted the first-ever Alaska Youth Climate Summit, featuring Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Alaskan youth leaders from across the political spectrum.
Over a dozen youth leaders assembled for the event: the student body president of Alaska Pacific University, a co-founder of High Schoolers for Carbon Dividends, a young leader with Alaska Native Heritage Center, a staffer with the Launch Alaska start-up accelerator, an Arctic Youth Ambassador, and more.
Senator Murkowski joined the summit for two and half hours for a wide-ranging discussion on climate impacts in Alaska, potential policy solutions, and the economic opportunity around innovating and deploying clean energy technologies. The group discussed the pathbreaking Energy Act of 2020 and the importance of bipartisanship for ensuring durable—and therefore effective—climate policy.
After the morning session, the group met with leaders from the Alaska State Legislature. Among them, Rep. Bryce Edgmon (fmr. Speaker of the House), Rep. Matt Claman, Rep. Tiffany Zulkosky, and Rep. Zack Fields.
It was an exciting and productive event, and will be followed by further organizing and engagement on this issue. Photo highlights from the summit are included below.
