New Student Body President Op-Ed in the Deseret News
Utah’s leaders should unite behind a carbon fee & dividend
By Nouman Kante, President of the Utah Student Association
Nouman Kante, who serves as the president of the state-wide Utah Student Association, is out with a great new op-ed in the Deseret News. The Utah Student Association is made up of student body presidents across the state, representing more than 180,000 Utah students.
In the piece, Kante makes the case for bipartisan leadership on climate change and support for the carbon dividends solution:
What’s needed is leadership — leadership that can chart a path forward with both parties in creating a cleaner and more resilient economy. While getting Republicans and Democrats to agree on climate may seem like a tall order, I am optimistic that it can be achieved.
The key is seeking out consensus solutions built around sound economic principles. They are most likely to earn the trust of leaders on both sides by tackling the problem efficiently and effectively, while also growing the economy. For this reason, I see the carbon dividends approach as the most promising solution.
Kante, who also served as the 2021-22 student body president of Southern Utah University, joined fellow student body presidents in Utah last year in calling for leadership on this topic.
They are also among the 400+ signers, from across the country, of the Student Government Leaders’ Statement on Carbon Dividends—the largest-ever declaration of student government leaders on any topic.
